SCHOOL HISTORY

History of Guiddam Elementary School

In the early 50’s, Barangay Guiddam was thinly populated. There were fewer houses because of the existence of rough roads. Most of the people who lived in this place were inhabited. There was no school whatsoever, until such time a barangay captain was elected in the late 50’s,who was very interested to put up a primary school.

The Barrio Council of Guiddam held a meeting on December 21, 1964, and came up with Resolution No. 7 stating that:

  • The school of Guiddam site has been claimed back by the owner because of no deed of Donation papers or deed of purchase executed by the Donor and or acceptance of deed by School Authority;
  • That the school lot to be retained for the school if the PTA could pay the amount of FIVE HUNDRED PESOS (p500.00) for the purchase of the present lot where the school of Guiddam is actually located, after the necessary has been duly accomplished in favor of Guiddam Elementary School.
  • That due to lack of PTA fund, the Barrio Council has decided to pay the lot for P500.00 from the accumulated 10% land tax collection .
  • That, by virtue of power vested to the Barrio Charter of Guiddam thru the Barrio Captain , he was authorized to purchase the school lot after the necessary documents of purchase has been properly executed.
  • That as per Declaration of Real Property the school, Guiddam Elementary School, Guiddam, Abulug, Cagayan as the owner is located in Cadastral Lot No.38155-D with the following boundaries: North: 38155-B; East: 38155-J; South: 38143; West: 38155-C-2; in a residential lot with a total land area of 7,740 sq.m.

For the first year of operation, grade one pupils were enrolled followed by the grades two and three in the succeeding years. Classrooms were made of nipa and bamboo. It was under a two-teacher schools where two grades were combined. School population became bigger and bigger until it became a complete elementary school with six teachers and one school head to supervise.

The following became the school heads of the school:

  1. Mrs. Eufrosina T. Ulita, Head Teacher,
  2. Mrs. Merlina M. Pacis, Principal I,
  3. Dr. Silvino B. Siddayao Jr. Principal I,
  4. Dr. Perlita B. Ricamora, Principal II and
  5. Dr.Editha T. Oliva, Principal II.

It became very progressive. School buildings were improved. There were innovations, changes in terms of pupil progress. Teachers underwent Post Graduate Studies to enrich their knowledge and skills. Guiddam Elementary School participated contests and activities of the Dep Ed. One of which is the SIGA (School in a Garden) under the administration of Dr. Silvino B. Siddayao Jr., where the school was adjudged as the Best SIGA Implementer and became a National Winner in 1997 – 1998.

The school at present has enough classrooms for all grades level. However, there are no available ancillary rooms for the canteen, Home Economics, Industrial Arts and others. Likewise, these classrooms need minor and major repairs on windows, ceilings, roofing’s and doors.

While it is true that there is 1:1 learner seat ratio, the school needs additional seats because every now and then some seats are being destroyed. Some of these destroyed seats are repaired but still some are totally damaged.

Water supply is a big problem in the school. The school has only a pressurized tank water system but not safe to drink. That’s why the school needs functional and potable source of water supply. There is available established hand washing facilities in the school connected to the water system.

The toilets in the school were built-in in all classrooms. They are built-in CR’s which are used by boys and girls per grade level. It is a shared CR. There are no available bowls/urinals exclusive for boys and girls.

With regards to learner textbook ratio, there are shortages in most of the grade levels in all the learning areas. The school has no library.

Other learning facilities in the school includes the downloaded DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) with 7 desk top computers, 1 laptop and 2 screen projectors. Televisions and VCD players available per grade level were initiatives of the advisers through HPTA projects.

The school has a supply of electricity. There are also internet service providers available in the locality. However, the school did not subscribe yet because of unavailability of funds. Instead, teachers use the pre-paid wi-fi gadgets.

There are eleven (11) classroom teachers in the school. Ten (10) of them are female and one (1) male, all are nationally funded. The school is headed by a principal.

For the current school year, it was very evident that the school has a low percentage of wasted pupils. There are no records of child abuse in the school or any sort of violence against children. However, the teachers keep on discussing the DEPED order on the Child Protection Policy to remind everyone on their roles as parents, teachers and pupils.
