HISTORY

Abra Valley Colleges is a pioneer tertiary-level institution in the Province of Abra. It was first located across the road where the former Abra High School, now the Abra State of Science and Technology stands.

Its present building, which is concrete gradually rose to a three-storey structure, is the remnant of the Bayquen Hotel, It was leveled to the ground during the last global war. But long before this structural development, the old building was only roofed with cogon and bamboo materials. There were even times when students had to use umbrellas to shield themselves from raindrops and have to raise their feet to the chairs to avoid the rising water. Despite the inconvenience, the administration and the students were not discourages from their pursuit of higher learning. The year 1948 is unforgettable for the Abrenians, especially the financially handicapped. It was in this year that the institution was founded under the leadership of the late Mr. Pedro V. Borgoña, a man of vision who dreamt of educating the Abrenians. That the school was named Abra Valley Junior College, Inc.

Graduates from most of the secondary schools of the province particularly from the Abra High School enrolled in the College. Majority of the graduates from its first batch landed jobs. Some occupied high profile employment until their retirement: while many are still in service.

In addition to what were existing, other courses where added and given permission to drop the word “Junior” from its original name was given; hence it is known as Abra Valley Colleges.

April 1993 is another productive year. There was a struggle to respond to public demands for new courses. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC), and the 2-year Computer Secretarial Course (CSC) were offered. December 22 of the same year, Mr. Francis A. Borgoña, the eldest son of the founder, redeemed the College from a public auction in the amount of P 4.5 million, with the help of his cousin Mr. Francisco del Rosario. Five years later 1998, the Bachelor of Science in Criminology (BS Crim) was offered.

Due to public demand more courses were offered. Bachelor of Secondary Education, Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Science in Hotel & Restaurant Management, and the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology were started during the millennium year.

Amidst the serious problems the school had faced, through the efforts and determination of the incumbent Chairman of the Board and President of the College, Mr. Francis A. Borgoña with the able support from employees the institution stood firm through thick and thin. In the year 1998, the College was given another 50 years of corporate life by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with legitimate reason in spite of legal charges as regards its dissolution. On June 28, 2000, the school was repurchased from Mr. Del Rosario, making the College free-from-any-debts.

Inspired by the essence and ideals of democratic principles of educational management, the President now holds the reign with great devotion and dedication. It is not therefore surprising that with his able leadership, the College has produced full-fledged nurses, criminologist and educators, with his wisdom and dynamism he was able to put the speech laboratory, network with the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) for the “Radio ng Bayan” station (95.3 HOT- FM): the creation of Abra valley Colleges Community Health Research and Development Foundation inc. In year 2001; The AVC-ISP (Internet Service Provider) in 2002 which served the students, employees, and our clients in private and private government offices of Bangued, Abra; the computer laboratory which has 27 computers units and fully air conditioned; the electronic library (E-lib) which has 16 computer units provided with internet for the work, surfing and browsing at the different websites; the construction of six (6) storey building to accommodate new courses such as Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Social Work, He also initiated the establishment of a Research, Extension and Development Center of the school to facilitate academic enhancement and extension services for the benefit of its constituents. Teachers were encouraged to enroll in their post graduate programs to upgrade the quality of education and produce globally competitive Abrenian youths.

Today with the, “Man in Action” the “Man of Wisdom and principles”, no other than the President, Francis A. Borgoña together with the ever supportive faculty and staff, Abra Valley Colleges shines brighter in the New Millennium with a common interest, “To Glorify no one but God.
